they did something to you... with a radio? rico nodded, furrowing his eyebrows. "when there are a lot of signals at once, especially at certain frequencies, i... can't move. they figured that out a long time ago," he explained. again, he didn't know much about what it was doing scientifically but he'd experienced it several times. duke. you? "rico," he said, shifting awkwardly. "you're bleeding," he said, not having been very aware of his surroundings when duke got shot. "what happened?"

”They figured that out a long time ago.” ”Son of a bitch.” Duke muttered. ”How close do the frequencies need to be for you to pick up on them?” Because that could definitely be.. inconvenient. Of course, some people didn’t even need fancy radios to be incapacitated. ”You’re bleeding. What happened?” ”They fucking shot me.” Not that he could really fault them for it.. he had been waving around a gun. Still, he was pretty pissed off. With his hands bound there wasn’t much he could do about the wound besides keep his leg elevated in attempt to reduce the blood loss, which he had been doing since they were first tossed in the truck. ”Any idea where they’re taking us?”

how close do the frequencies need to be for you to pick up on them? "it... seems to be similar to what you could hear. if there are a lot of them, i can hear them from a little further away. they feel... louder. if there's just one, and it's not as strong, maybe twenty to forty feet. i've never tried to test it out." there were still a lot of things about himself he didn't understand. they fucking shot me. he furrowed his eyebrows. "did it go through?" any idea where they're taking us? he frowned, wishing he didn't. "i'm not sure, but whenever i did something they didn't like, they threatened to bring me to some place for... people like me. for experimentation, they said." so that wasn't sounding like something he wanted to be a part of.

”It.. seems to be similar to what you could hear.” ”So it’s like a dog whistle.” Duke surmised. ”You have those where you’re from?” Yeah, it was definitely racist but he was pretty sure Rico was not born in America. ”Did it go through?” He nodded, glancing at the wound. ”Mhm, it was a clean shot.” Fortunately, it hadn't gone through his bone or nicked an artery or anything. ”Some place for.. people like me. For experimentation, they said.” He let out a breath. ”Okay, scientists are usually a bit more reasonable than the idiots the fed keep for muscle.” Maybe he could reason with them, scientist to scientist and all. At the very least he figured these people could answer some questions. Honestly, he wasn’t even wholly opposed to being part of an experiment if it was going to help figure out what the hell was going on with them.

You have those where you're from? Rico raised an eyebrow, shaking his head. "What does this have to do with dogs?" Mhm, it was a clean shot. He nodded, pretty frustrated. "It needs pressure," he said, shifting toward him and trying to lean against his wound best he could. Duke couldn't die now-- Rico would lose his mind. Okay, scientists are usually a bit more reasonable than the idiots the fed keep for muscle. He gave Duke a look, not so sure about that. "We're being brought there in the back of a truck." He didn't have much confidence in their situation. "Where are you from?" He didn't sound like it was Connecticut.

”What does this have to do with dogs?” ”Dogs hear at a higher frequency than humans. So when you blow a dog whistle, the dogs come running, but no one else hears a thing.” Which.. sounded a lot like what was happening with Rico. He was 'hearing' some frequency the rest of them couldn’t comprehend. ”We’re being brought there in the back of a truck.” ”I didn’t say it was an ideal situation.. But I try to maintain a positive attitude.” It might have been the blood loss talking but thinking they were going to die wasn’t going to help them get out of there any faster. ”Where are you from?” ”Austin.. Texas. You?”

so when you blow a dog whistle, the dogs come running, but no one else hears a thing. that actually sounded pretty similar to what rico was trying to describe. "yes, that's it," he confirmed. but i try to maintain a positive attitude. "you're insane," he said in good humor. austin... texas. you? "i've never heard of it," he admitted. "you sound different," he explained. he'd never heard duke's accent before. "i'm from argentina."

”You’re insane.” ”You hear radios in your head.” Duke retorted, and while he was clearly joking as well, Rico didn’t get to call anyone crazy. ”I’ve never heard of it.” ”Come visit sometime. It’s down south— way better than this dump.” He was slightly.. well, very.. biased. ”I’m from Argentina.” ”What the hell brought you all the way over here?” Argentina wasn’t even close to the US.

you hear radios in your head. rico scoffed. "i'm not hallucinating them," he defended in good humor. what the hell brought you all the way over here? "a ship," he said, grinning slightly. "where i come from, everyone thought i had demons in my head," he explained. "everyone who was different was sent away." apparently the united states had their own problems. "maybe they'll let you go... once your test results are returned normal."

”A ship.” ”Smartass.” Duke said, but he was grinning too. He could get along with another smartass. Even if the guy did hallucinate radios in his head. ”Where I come from, everyone thought I had demons in my head.” ”Maybe Argentina ain’t that different from Texas after all.” The demons had been held responsible for many a thing in his small, religious town.
”Maybe they’ll let you go, once your test results are returned normal.” That didn’t make him feel as good as he was hoping it would. ”What if they.. don’t.. come back normal?” he asked, starting to get the idea that might have been the more likely scenario.
