"I wouldn't be speaking to the queen. I'm German," Erik grunted, in a tone which specifically implied that Sean was uncultured. "And shouldn't you be used to pompous Britishisms, by now?" It was not intended as a slight against Charles, more a joke - though whether Erik truly knew the difference between a joke and an insult was often debatable.
It was inconvenient, that they now had not one but two companions. A small part of Erik had hoped for further conversation with Charles, but instead he was left with Jubilee. Still preferable to Sean, at least so far, though he could tell already that she was a talker. Fortunately, there was a point upon which Erik shared common ground with each of them, and that was an interest in mutation. He watched the bright display from Jubilee's hand with keen fascination, the serious lines of his face easing for a moment. Intrigued by what else she could do with this power. As she concluded, he nodded a little. "And how precise is your control? Could you explode a lock on a door, for example, without damaging the door itself?"
He made no comment on her ability to avoid Charles' telepathy, though part of him wondered how much of a nuisance this was to Charles. Mostly because she had already launched into a series of questions that reminded Erik how little experience he had dealing with the younger generation.
He cast a quick glance in Charles' direction, half expecting to find a satisfied smirk there, before steeling himself against annoyance and shifting to look at Jubilee properly.
"I am Magneto." It was a name she should have known, but Erik was beginning to think Charles had simply written him out of the school's history. "I control metal, and I can sense it. Your earrings are made of an interesting alloy..." He lifted his hand and twitched his fingers, causing the jewelry to lift and then drop back beneath gravity's whim. "That's how I knew. The armor is bulletproof. The helmet blocks telepathy from my mind. The cape..." he glanced toward the rear view mirror in an attempt to glimpse Sean's face, before his attention returned to Jubilee, "is a statement. If your ability is to create fireworks, I am sure you can understand that?" He raised his eyebrows.
As irritating as the endless questions were, at least she was treating him like a person. If she was the only potential ally in this odd group. so be it.
"I doubt Charles would ever want me to teach at the school, though he did once teach me," he explained, and his lips almost curled into a smile before the guilt, the regret, washed over the brief sentiment. His tone darkened a shade as he pulled back, turning to peer out the window. "You are lucky that you have found this place. I don't know what your life was before this, but the world can be cruel. It does not understand us. In fact, it actively destroys us, and to pretend otherwise is to perpetuate the injury already done to us. I am trying to change that - but it isn't happy work. We are not all meant to be happy." He took a breath, though his fingers had curled back into his palms.

Charles just barely managed to resist cracking a smile at Erik’s joke. There were reasons the two of them had once gotten along. Erik’s occasional maturity and worldliness were.. unlike most of the mansion’s current residents, and Charles could appreciate the banter on such lighthearted subjects. The problem was he didn’t want to appreciate anything that came out of Erik’s mouth. Not in their current situation.
While Erik was surely fuming over the pair that had joined them, Charles was glad it was not the two of them alone in the car. And if there was a small part of him that got petty satisfaction from the fact that Jubilee immediately began talking his ear off, well… he thought he deserved that much. After all, Erik should have spent years in prison for the things he’d done and it was partly due to Charles’s intervention that he had not. This punishment somehow felt more just.
He remained silent, though he did exchange a few looks with Sean as Erik launched into his own explanation. ”Don’t say it.” he warned telepathically where he knew Sean would be most itching to interrupt. The outfit, the name, it is all ridiculous, but stranger things had brought people comfort. He was a bit concerned when Erik began to answer how the two of them knew each other, but he found himself nodding, glancing at Erik briefly through the rear view mirror before he turned away.
Though he was still speaking to Jubilee, Charles imagined that the last part of that message had been intended more for him to hear, but he didn't engage the debate. Erik was not meant to be unhappy- he had chosen a path of unhappiness when he refused to see the good in people and pushed away everyone who had ever cared about him.

I'm German. "That does the opposite of make me like you more," Sean muttered. He did end up letting it go and focusing on the road... mostly for Charles's sake. And he would never admit it to anyone ever but he was interested in hearing more about how Erik's mutation worked when Jubilee asked. He did want to interrupt, and he let out a breath of irritation when Charles stepped in. Erik's ability was cool. His outfit and dramatic flare... not so much.
"Fine," he retorted directly to Charles in silence.
We are not all meant to be happy. He shook his head-- he couldn't remain silent anymore. "D'd you ever think that maybe part of being happy is not choosing to be a grump all the time?" he asked... and this time he wasn't even trying to pick a fight-- it was a genuine curiosity. "I mean, yea, some people suck. But not everyone does." It was... probably the biggest thing that separated the Brotherhood from the X-Men. A point-of-view.
"So... any idea how big this mind machine is going to be?" he added. Because if it was going to be the size of a car he had some concerns.

“No where near that level of precision, yet.” Jubilee answered, but it didn’t seem to get her down that she was still learning. “I can blow the handle and lock off a door without entirely blowing up the door itself. Although, I still have times I just blow the whole door and parts of the walls around it to bits.” A half smirk, half sheepish smile soon formed on her face, “When my powers first manifested you really should have seen what I could do. I blew up half the alley and knocked out two mall guards before giving them to slip. It startled me at first, but I laugh at it now. Talk about an explosive discovery.”
But, Erik’s own inquiry did give the young girl some thought. Maybe she should practice more on focusing on smaller targets, narrow her field of explosive energy and damage than what it was. She probably didn’t really do that enough come to think of it, and why she was still somewhat struggling to keep it in control.
Surprisingly, Erik humored her bombardment of questions, answering each one precisely to the point, but nevertheless still held Jubilee’s attention. Magneto? Like the magnetosphere? She did remember that from school, kinda, but she mentally shrugged and listened as Erik explained his powers and armor. “Making a statement through fashion, I can respect that.” She grinned again, eyes shifting to the helmet as he explained it was to block telepathy. Interested there was a metal that could do such a thing. “I’ll stick to the static in my brain thanks. That has got to get hot after a while Mister Magneto, you start sweating and get helmet hair, then there’s the lingering smell you probably have to wash out.” There she went rambling again. She even almost missed Erik’s explanation of how they met, but it wasn’t exactly what she was expecting to hear. She expected something far different, maybe something straight out of a movie or the like but she still nevertheless was curious, “So you two were good friends then, as well as Sean. But how come that’s not the case now? You two look ready to jump out of the car the moment something doesn’t seem right.” For all her babbling and seemingly airheadedness, the teenager had noticed the awkwardness, the tension, between the three. What was so bad that they seemed uncomfortable?
Though she cheeriness soon faded slightly as Erik changed his tone and mood, causing her to glance down at her lap with a mournful look, “Up until a year and a half ago, it was normal.” She admitted, “My parents were good people, accepted me for doing the stupid stuff that I did as well as being a mutant. I may not have gone through your hardships Magneto, but I did face tragedy that was more personal. I lost my parents to a freak accident, ran away from a good family because I didn’t want to be a burden to them, and survived on the streets and the mall until I came across the X-Men.” She explained but paused as Sean finally butted in regarding Erik’s words that some didn’t deserve happiness. And honestly, Sean had a good point, which snapped Jubilee out of her gloomy mood to one of her own annoyance, “Sean’s right. You’re only unhappy if you choose to be. And maybe you want to be Gloomneto for the rest of your life, fighting some...whatever it is you’re fighting, but I’m not going to let my loss stop me from trying to be the person my parents raised me to be.” She declared firmly, her vigor renewed.
“Maybe you just need to find that little bit of light to soften the steel heart of yours.” She finished, letting Sean’s question take center stage then.
