POWERS & ABILITIES
Reina’s mutation involves the manipulation and copying the properties of naturally occurring glasses.
Her primary mutation is manipulating these natural glasses, which include silica dioxide (better known as quartz), obsidian, tektites, Libyan desert glass, fulgurites, moldovite, trinitite, balsaltic glass, and siliceous skeletons. Through touch or short-ranged psionic means, Reina can bend the glass to her will, literally and figuratively, causing the glass to alter in density from the hardest it can be to a liquid state without requiring heat, alter its shape, and break apart or mend glasses together. With a thought she can cause glass to hover in place, giving a sort of simulated telekinesis that enables her to work with and direct the glass with will alone. Not only can she manipulate glass, she can sense the presence of it within her vicinity, including materials with glass-like qualities such as amorphous metals and man-made glass. Her control is fine tuned to the point she can shape and alter the glass with a single thought and a few gestures, capable of making the glass work as offensive and defensive as much as she can with just creating things with it as well as being able to sense the faintest grain of the material.
However, Reina’s mutation seems to go further in the past six years, a secondary mutation if you will or just an advancement of her current mutation. In recent years, Reina has discovered she can take on an organic, flexible glass form that takes on the property of glass that she is copying, as well as allowing her limited control of its shape. Each form grants her some level of enhanced strength and durability, heat resistance (or how much she can handle thermal shock), and self-sustenance (not requiring to eat, drink, or breathe) for up to three days.
- Quartz: Reina's hardest yet heaviest form that grants her greater bouts of strength and durability, as well as requiring tremendous stress to do damage with. Thus, she does have a fair resistance to extreme temperatures, though is her hardest to manipulate the shape of. She takes on an uneven but crystal-clear crystalline appearance in this form.
- Obsidian: This form is one of Reina's stronger, harder forms that is more heat resistant yet easier to manipulate its shape. The coloration can vary from a glossy, translucent black to a metallic sheen depending on the type of obsidian she copies.
- Tektite: A brownish-green glass form that is Reina's second strongest glass form, and has a rough texture. Like her Quartz form, is more resilient to extreme weather and gives her greater strength and durability. Like her quartz form, is harder to manipulate its shape.
- Desert glass: A zircon/Reidite based glass that is a canary-yellow and opaque. This form is unique in that it is strong and sturdy like her tektite and quartz forms, yet can withstand more punishment in being able to bend and flex. Requires a fair bit of pressure and heat to cause true damage, and is one of the easier glasses to manipulate.
- Fulgurite: Reina's lightest form, made from a roughly textured, hollowed glass form that has a branched like growths. Though more fragile, this form has limited conductivity of electricity and one of the most easiest to manipulate in terms of shape and density to a degree.
- Moldavite: A translucent, missy green glass originating from meteor impacts on Earth, as well as one of the harder glasses. Reina takes takes on a mossy green glass shape that is also rough in texture increasing her strength and durability. She also has limited radiation protection.
- Trinitite: A quadicrystal glass still made of natural elements due to the Trinity Nuclear Bomb test, a smooth on the top and rough on the bottom glass. This is one of Reina’s more fragile glass forms yet also another of her easiest to manipulate due to the many pore-like holes in the material.
- Balsaltic Glass-Pele's Hair: A thin, thread like glass that occurs in the same manner as obsidian, but most often from lava flows. The color is a distinct yellow to gold with a slight sheen to it, her form resembling an assortment of thread- or hair-like structure that is the most versatile of her forms yet the weakest. She is capable of controlling the strands to act as tendrils, allowing her to elongate, split apart, whip, or snag individuals as well as alter her shape and flexibility more easily.
- Siliceous Skeleton: A most unusual skeletal structure of sponge types of protein-rich spicules with axial filaments containing high concentrations of silica. This particular form is considered a biological glass, porous and not nearly as hard or stiff as normal glass but more flexible to manipulate based on the hydration of Reina’s body. Her form resembles a ivory white porous skeletal structure that is incredibly resistant to high pressures and exceptionally more flexible than her other forms, aside from the Pete’s hair.
However, Reina’s abilities do have drawbacks. Much of her abilities require high concentrations of the base form of all glass, some variation of silica, or at least enough for her to alter and work with. The less silica present, the harder it is to control and manipulate or cannot be used at all. These glasses must also be naturally occurring elements, with some exceptions such as amorphous metals of which she can only sense the presence of but can not manipulate. Her glass forms are also somewhat of a drawback as she can only maintain these forms for three days tops and cannot mix and match attributes of each one, but she can shift between the forms which may take a few minutes and quickly saps her energy. Like those such as Emma Frost, if knocked out or overexerted, she will automatically convert back to normal. Certain vibrational frequencies, heat intensities, and hardness factor are something Reina must always be aware of in her glass forms, as she can only manipulate the hardness of her forms to a certain extent before pressure could cause these forms to crack. Distance and vicinity are also vital for her control and sensing of natural glasses, requiring her to be within at least a mile radius of said sources or she must rely on her small collection she has in the form of a necklace handing around her neck. Outside this, Reina’s highly independent and reckless nature can also be a major personality weakness, getting herself into trouble often or being difficult to work with.
Aside from her mutant abilities, Reina has skills as a glassblower via the use of her own two hands and additional tools, especially when she must hide her mutation. With being raised in Germany most of her life, Reina is trilingual in English, German, and French (self-taught), as well as street smart for living a number of years on the street. Her skills from the streets include being adaptive, lock picking, thievery, and reading people.
BRIEF HISTORY
Reina is a young woman who has known a bit of a rough life since she was born.
Born in 1937, Reina Krause is the daughter of a German Romani tavern owner, and his wife, a French-American woman who worked as a nurse in Würzburg at the time. A regular patron to the tavern during her late nights, the two would eventually date and marry a few years before the start of the Second World War. Despite hard times, Reina would soon be born, yet would only know her parents for a good year before they were forced to take drastic measures. During the crack down of rounding up those not deemed of Aryan perfection, Reina's family was targeted due to her father's Romani heritage and as well as her parents' characteristics. In a desperate bid to save their daughter's life, Reina was placed in one of the next towns over with distant friends and becoming one of the many Hidden Children at the time.
Unfortunately, by the time she was five, life only seemed to deteriorate and soon shatter. Spending such a short four years pretending to be a "cousin" of the family, Reina struggled to maintain appearances as well as stay out of sight. Unfortunately, a suspicious and greedy neighbor would turn the family in to the gestapo in return for reward. Such a raid was unexpected and the family was quickly rounded up among others under suspicion, taking them to a small prison camp nearby. Considered a stopping point for some, Reina resided here for the remaining three years of the war, finding herself subjected to abuse, experimentation, and horrid conditions. Such stress would cause her mutant abilities to prematurely manifest by the age of eight, though she would not discover this until the camp was raided by the Allies in 1945.
Taken to a local orphanage with many other surviving children, the young Reina struggled to find solace in her situation. Traumatized and stressed, especially with no hope of ever knowing family, Reina unexpected caused the windows in the room she shared with other girls to flex and warp, scaring her bunkmates. Considered a freak, she would spend many of her years after running away from the orphanage or roaming the streets, learning to steal, fight, and live with what her environment allowed. Such times when she wasn't trying to survive, Reina worked with her unusual talent, practicing sensing, shaping, and understanding her control of glass, slowly working through what she could and could not do. By fourteen, Reina became adept enough she would use what broken shards of glass she could find and molded them into works of art to sell for spare change, eventually catching the eye of a young couple in the local area, intrigued by her technique. Inviting Reina to see their shop, she was surprised to find the couple were glassblowers, living a quiet and simple life.
Invited to live with them, Reina was formally adopted by the couple and took their last name as she never knew her true family name before then. Life finally looked up for her as her teen years were spent learning to become a glassblower as well, and extending her understanding of her own mutation which did not seem to bother the couple. Life was finally normal, and Reina gradually grew past her trauma for the most part, finding the glass art form helped her to focus and find strength in resolving to help others. More specifically, she made it her goal to help those like her, "freaks" of nature as Reina saw newer types of persecution pop up throughout her life, of those "different". Her short experiences in the camp as well as with the orphanage were a constant reminder that even with the Nazi Party gone, there were always others like them.
Soon enough, at the age of twenty-three, Reina saved up enough money to decide to move to America, bidding her parents farewell and immigrating to Seattle. Here, she apprenticed at another glass shop, saving up to open her own and during this time discovering a secondary mutation of her glass forms. With time, Reina has in the past four years achieved her goal of opening her own shop and emporium, Crystal Reflections, in Seattle as well as becoming a vigilantee by night in helping a small population of mutants living here,
