it had been about a year since charles's injury and sean had been working with him to make the mansion as accessible as possible. they'd also been talking about opening up the school so they had been working basically nonstop on trying to make the building what it needed to be. that involved moving a lot of heavy furniture and sean's mutation wasn't superhuman muscles so he took it upon himself to take a break.
and taking a break meant going through charles's stuff to find the treasures within.
there was so much alcohol.
he downed a couple shots of vodka and inspected the room before going to find charles.
"hey, hey, ch--rarles," he called, going over to him and patting his shoulder. "you've gotta come see this. it's like a candy store but it doesn't taste as good."

It had been.. a lot. Charles had known as soon as he’d realized how many mutants were out there that this was something he wanted to do, but actually starting an academy was no small task. The house had been left in the state he remembered it from his childhood, plus a decade of dust. It wasn’t accessible, it wasn't childproof, and outside of the surprisingly useful nuclear bunker, it wasn’t particularly suitable for training mutants. And then of course there was the meetings and the paperwork and accreditation needed to make them a legitimate institution. It felt like they had barely made a dent in it all.
Sean had been.. honestly a lot more helpful than Charles had ever expected he would be. He had assumed that, once things settled down and he was managing, Sean would want to return to his old.. far more normal life, but instead he had stayed, thrown himself into working on the school, and well.. it was certainly never dull with him around.
”Hey, hey—“ ”Sean? What are you-“ He figured out the answer to that question before the words had even finished coming out of his mouth. ”You’ve been drinking.” he acknowledged. ”It’s like a candy store but it doesn't taste as good.” Oh boy. He followed Sean, though it was questionable who was leading who really, to what was a fairly large and very well stocked liquor cabinet. He nodded, not particularly surprised, though it had been some time since he had seen it for himself. ”My parents had quite the collection.”

you've been drinking. "no i haven't, that's illegal," sean muttered, patting charles's shoulder. "i discovered gold," he said once they returned to the room together, gesturing toward the stash with pride. my parents had quite the collection. "come on, take some," he said, handing charles a bottle. "you've been worked up since we started fixing the place up. you need a break. all the best ideas are born when you're on liquid courage, charlie."

”All the best ideas are born when you're on liquid courage, Charlie.” He scoffed, taking the bottle and pouring himself a glass. ”And what would you know about that, if you’ve never drank before?” Charles had had his fair share of drunk ‘epiphanies’ in college. While they had mostly been fun in the moment, he would not call any of them particularly good ideas when looking back in hindsight. In fact most of them made him cringe a bit, while at the same time wishing he were back there.
”How am I supposed to be responsible for a school full of children if I can’t even keep you from breaking the law?” he asked, in good humor, but there was some truth to the concern. If they were going to do this, have students there full times, they weren’t just teaching them about genetics and helping them learn use their powers. They were keeping them safe and out of trouble, caring for them when they got hurt or sick, and making sure they ate every day. There had been days the only reason they ate anything was because Sean had the mind to order a pizza.

and what would you know about that, if you've never drank before? sean smirked. "i listen to a lot of radio," he pointed out . "come on-- you need to chill." the guy was stressed out to the point of counter-productivity. how am i supposed to be responsible for a school full of children if i can't even keep you from breaking the law? "you think too much," sean said. "we can keep kids safe. this place doesn't have to be perfect. it just has to be a home." kids were probably going to knock things over and get hurt sometimes. they were probably going to get into the liquor sometimes. but that didn't mean their lives were going to be terrible. it just meant they were going to act like kids would act in a place where they were comfortable. "i think... a lot of it is just figuring crap out as you go. the... "parenting" stuff, i mean. for a lot of kids this place is going to beat their own homes just by letting them be mutants."

”I listen to a lot of radio.” ”Mhm,” Charles murmured, smirking slightly. ”You do remember I’m a mind reader, don’t you?” Not that he needed his powers to see through that bullshit. ”These terrible lies are actually insulting.” Sean was.. very good at getting Charles to lighten up.
Surprisingly, Sean was also a good listener, who didn’t dismiss Charles’s concerns despite the fact he didn’t seem particularly worried about anything, ever. ”I wish it was that simple. Legally, ethically..” There was a lot to think about. ”If we do something wrong, people could get hurt, discovered as mutants, we could be arrested.” And those were just a couple of the possibilities.
”Why did you stay here?” he asked, genuinely curious. Sean’s life hadn’t been particularly traumatic and his power was easy enough to control. He knew Sean hadn’t bought into Erik’s nonsense like the others but he certainly had options besides this if he wanted them.

You do remember I'm a mind reader, don't you? Sean smirked. "Why aren't you a mind reader when I want to eavesdrop on people?" he asked, his speech a tad slurred. These terrible lies are actually insulting. "You need to chill," he repeated, moving his hands in a downward motion.
If we do something wrong, people could get hurt, discovered as mutants, we could be arrested. Sean waved his hand. "That's like... if we do something really wrong. We're more likely to do something just a little wrong, and that's okay," he said. "And... if something really wrong does happen, we know a bunch of mutants." He didn't see how Charles, a man with such incredible power to alter the mind's memory, could ever be so worried about anyone finding out anything.
Why did you stay here? He furrowed his brows, thinking about the question and in turn giving Charles much more detailed an answer than what would come out of his mouth. "Because I didn't have anything better to do," he admitted. He hadn't been close with his family. He hadn't been doing anything important. He liked helping people and he liked being with people that respected him. That was why he'd stayed.

”Why aren’t you a mind reader when I want to eavesdrop on people?” ”Because I have morals and ethics.” Charles replied, with a sigh that indicated having such ethics was actually nothing more than exhausting.
”That’s like.. if we do something really wrong.” ”We almost started a nuclear war last year.” he reminded. 'Really wrong' was not out of the realm of possibility. Of course, it was Erik who had nearly started the war, but Charles had done his part to cover the damage and by default, would always bear a little of that responsibility.
”I know this is different." he said, before Sean could. "There’s just.. a lot to consider.” They were small things, but there were enough of them for it to feel overwhelming. While they couldn't realistically plan for every possible thing that could go wrong, Charles didn't think it would be a bad idea to be prepared to handle a lot of them.
He did pick up a little bit more of Sean’s answer than he had chosen to share out loud, and he nodded, understanding a little bit more about his point of view. ”Thank you.” he said, sincerely. ”You’ve been.. a tremendous help, with everything. I don’t think I would have gotten this far on my own.”
