POWERS & ABILITIES
Azazel is a mutant of many talents. The most obvious mutation is his red-skinned demonic appearance, including pointed ears, dark red skin, elongated canines, as well as five foot prehensile tail that acts as a third arm of sorts and microscopic suction disks naturally on his hands allowing him to cling to surfaces. But, this physical mutation is not strictly for aesthetics. Azazel has a flexible bone structure enabling him to perform master contortionist level feats as well as superhuman agility, reflexes, and stamina. Though, Azazel has additional powers such as being a powerful, if one of the most powerful, teleporters via access to an inter-dimensional world he calls the “Brimstone Dimension”. This allows Azazel limited access over space-time, disappearing in a puff of brimstone smell smoke with a “bamf” sound and moving at high speeds from one location to another, sometimes over vast distances without needing to know the location. But, he is capable of tapping into this dimension to project bubbles of brimstone energy that enable him to freeze time for a short while as well as create destructive concussive blast of reddish-black energy.
Azazel also has limited telepathic abilities, being able to project and communicate via his thoughts as well as deciphering unique brain patterns between humans and mutants. This grants him the ability to act as a “sensor” for finding or knowing of mutants in the area, and create psychic tethers between himself and allies. He also has limited psychopathy, or understanding the psychic imprints left in an area or object. Lastly, Azazel seems to have immortality or at least longevity where he can far longer than the average human.
For all these talents however, Azazel lacks other superhuman attributes such as superhuman strength, durability, and speed, making him vulnerable to conventional weapons. Though capable of several small quick teleports or moving people across vast distances, it does tire Azazel out overtime, and though he does not need to know a location to see it, it can make it much easier if he has seen the area before. Azazel’s telepathy is extremely limited, not being able to do most offensive or defensive techniques other telepaths can and makes it somewhat redundant to use other than communication and recon. There are also times Azazel might get overzealous or egocentric in his duties, coming off as extremely vain and sometimes can get sloppy or careless.
But, given he has lived a long life Azazel has picked up a fair few skills over his time. In particular, he has vast knowledge in several academic pursuits such as literature, art, music, architecture, history, industrial/machine based subjects, and limited knowledge in genetics and evolution. Azazel is a master of swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat as well as practiced in stealth and espionage. He is also multilingual in English, Russian, French, and Spanish.
BRIEF HISTORY
Azazel has lived a rather long lifetime, more than any probably could ever imagine. He was a different person, a different name, family, yet he still had his problems long before mutants became widely known to the world at large. He came from a time when mutants were rarely revered for their powers and seen as demons and heretics.
The man who would eventually call himself Azazel faced such persecution. It didn’t help with the fact he fit the concept of a demon, even Satan himself of biblical texts that brought so much pain and shame to his family. He was once hidden away from the world, harshly treated when he attempted to rebel. He knew his family was worried for his safety, as well as their own. For a while he complied, but became increasingly frustrated as he reached adulthood and remained close to home. Yet, he could not ignore the nagging need for freedom, to see beyond the very small walls and forest where his family lived outside one of early Russia’s villages. So, he committed to making a plan of escape, slipping away into the night and running off through the forest where he never looked back,
From there, Azazel has struggled to make a life before joining the infamous Hellfire Club. He became part of Russia’s many military iterations as well as working with the occasional outlaw or rogue. At one point, Azazel has even changed his aliases and deserted many times to change scenery. Overtime, he further discovered his abilities in battle, triggered by the stress of war and skirmishes and would eventually offer his services to the czars of Russia as a personal mercenary for hire using his honed skills, becoming a personal assassin and body guard.
His skills were great enough that by 1719, he was contracted by one of its highest members to work as an enforcer for the organization. Since then, Azazel had long since changed his name permanently to what it is now, basing it off the biblical figure for which he had often been compared or based on construed beliefs he was a demonic being incarnate. During this lifetime, Azazel far regimes rise and fall, and saw the Hellfire Club pass between hands several times while he remained loyal as it gave him more freedom to do what he desired, earning some scars along the way. By the time Sebastian Shaw had taken over, Azazel was a seasoned member and the club’s top enforcer alongside Riptide. When Shaw sought to make the “children of the atom” the dominant species, Azazel was there to take part alongside Emma Frost, Riptide, and later Angel.
After the Cuban Missile Crisis incident as well as the divergence between the first class of X-Men, the demonic mutant came to loyally serve Magneto, acknowledging his strength and values as well as feeling his method is much more in line with the concern of their people. For the short tenure he freely served the Brotherhood, Azazel began expressing an interest in the blue shapeshifter Mystique, but did not pursue anything due to their busy jobs of handling the governments and mutant kind. By 1964, once such mission saw Azazel bested for the first time in years, taking a solo mission to free what he thought were captured mutants but turned out to be a decoy convoy, falling into an unforeseen ambush. Severely wounded, the demonic mutant was unable to escape capture and was snagged by the United States government for studying and experimentation to better understand the mutant “problem.
Three years later, Azazel remains in a sedated state to keep him under control as well as chained down for additional measurements.
