POWERS & ABILITIES

Jack has a human ability to an inhuman extent. Recognized as low latent inhibition, Jack's ability allows him to interpret much more sensory information at once than the average person. He is not sensing any stimuli that a human would not be able to sense. Instead, he is picking up on all of this input information and able to process every bit of it at once.

The simplest way to understand low latent inhibition is to think of what a person notices about a new stimulus when it is of interest to the person. When people see things for the first time, they pay attention. They notice a lot of information simultaneously and quickly, such as the physical appearance of something, the smell, the sound, etc. After that initial encounter, most people tend to start losing those details the more they are exposed to something because it's no longer new and exciting. People with low latent inhibition take in all stimuli as if they are brand new.

It is involuntary and cannot be "shut off" any more than a human can choose to shut off their sense of sight or hearing or smell. Things can be done to dull these senses, such as shutting eyes or wearing headphones for noise cancellation, but there is little control over the information constantly coming in.

Jack notices everything. He often zones out because he is always taking mental notes of everything around him. He has a perfect memory for anything he can relate to a sensory experience. He can perfectly recall any sound or sight many years after they are perceived. Because of this, he can learn new information very quickly and has a well above average intelligence quotient.

Noticing everything comes with its disadvantages. Jack can experience sensory overload if he's put into a situation where there is a lot going on at once. For example, being in a crowded room full of loud noises or lots of movement may cause him to have a Focal Onset Impaired Awareness Seizure. This is basically a seizure that shuts down the senses briefly and is his body's way of calming his brain when he's overwhelmed.

BRIEF HISTORY

For as long as he can remember, Jack's biggest priority has been mining coal. Finding enough each day gets him left alone, while not finding enough costs him dinner. He was very young when he began to work in Odd, West Virginia, him and his siblings having been providing slave labor amongst a large population of mutants. He always kept his head down and did what he was told. Arguing with the people who run the mines never leads to any good.

He cares about his siblings and it makes him nervous that he seldom gets to see two of them. Jack spends most of his days working with Jeb. He knows very little about the world outside of the mines and so trying to leave has never been an option for him. Even at thirty five years old, he is rather naiive and doesn't really question why he's in the situation that he's in. It's just how it is and how it's always been. 

Jack is quiet, calm, and thoughtful. He's good at figuring things out and doesn't have much of a temper. He will push through pretty much anything without complaining and is often the voice of reason for Jeb. He worries about Waylon quite often and is really very family-oriented.
